Know What Each ZIP Code Actually Is

When you manage accounts in markets you've never visited, a ZIP code is just a number. You can't tell downtown from the far edge of the service area, so it's hard to judge what the numbers mean.

In a location report

Which of these are in town? Which are an hour away?

ZIPSpendConv.CPL
85004$2,13344$48
85258$7338$92
85326$2,3233$774
85139$2,2003$733

The numbers show that two ZIPs are expensive. They don't show why, or whether the areas around them have the same problem.

Run a Correlation Analysis on Your Own Data

Choose a performance metric, choose what to test it against, and get a coefficient, a p-value, and a scatter plot for each. Select a row below to see its chart.

Correlation results for Conversion Rate

Sample data · 78 ZIP codes

Conversion rate vs. median household income

Each dot is one ZIP code · Coefficient +0.52 · p < 0.001

0%5%10%15%$0$50K$100K$150K$200KMedian household income

In these ZIP codes, a higher median household income tends to come with a higher conversion rate. That's a lead to test, not proof of the cause.

Combined Campaigns

Combine Campaigns for More Reliable ZIP Code Data

Running several campaigns in the same area splits your conversions thin. Two conversions in one ZIP tells you almost nothing. Combine the campaigns and you have more data behind every decision.

You make the call
LeadUp reads your location data and only changes a campaign when you click to exclude or remove a ZIP.
See the status per campaign
Each row shows Excluded, Partial, or Not excluded, so you can see when a ZIP is out of only some campaigns.
Easy to undo
Select an excluded ZIP and remove the exclusion when you want to test the area again.

Local Services campaigns can't use ZIP exclusions, so LeadUp skips them. Location is only one source of waste, so pair this with the negative keyword tool to catch out-of-area searches, and use performance monitoring to get alerted when results drift.

FAQ

Google Ads Location Analysis Questions, Answered

Where the data comes from, how exclusions and combined campaigns work, and what the correlation analysis can and can't tell you.

What is Google Ads location analysis?

Google Ads location analysis means reviewing campaign performance by geographic area to find where budget is working and where it is being wasted. LeadUp does this at the ZIP code level, showing your Google Ads metrics on a map next to Census demographics so you can see what each area is, not just how it performed.

How do I see Google Ads performance by ZIP code?

Connect your Google Ads account to LeadUp, choose an account, and open a campaign. LeadUp fetches the ZIP code data from Google Ads and shows it on a map and in a sortable table. You can view the last 30, 90, 120, or 365 days.

Which metrics can I color the ZIP code map by?

You can color the map by conversions, spend, conversion rate, average CPC, or cost per capita. The table also includes impressions, clicks, CPL, revenue, and ROI, along with demographic and market insight columns you can turn on as needed.

Where does the demographic data come from?

It comes from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year estimates. Census data is published for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which closely approximate ZIP codes but are not always an exact match. Some areas, such as ZIP codes with few residents, may have limited or no demographic data.

What demographic data is included for each ZIP code?

LeadUp includes population, median household income, median home value, unemployment rate, education level, median age, per capita income, median rent, household size, total employment, poverty rate, income inequality, labor force participation, and gender ratio. It also calculates market insights such as market potential and market saturation by combining this data with your ad metrics.

How does the correlation analysis work?

You choose a performance metric such as conversion rate or CPL, then choose the demographic and market metrics to test against it. For each pair, LeadUp shows the correlation coefficient from -1 to +1, a p-value, a plain-language strength label, and a scatter plot with one point per ZIP code. It shows a statistical relationship, not the cause, so treat a strong result as something to test.

Can I exclude ZIP codes from Google Ads directly in LeadUp?

Yes. Select one or more ZIP codes in the location table and choose Exclude selected. LeadUp adds them as location exclusions on the campaigns you are viewing, and each row shows whether the ZIP is excluded from all of them, some of them, or none. To reverse it, select the ZIP and choose Remove exclusion. Local Services campaigns do not support this and are skipped, and LeadUp tells you if a ZIP code cannot be matched to a Google Ads location.

Does LeadUp change my campaigns automatically?

No. Viewing the map, table, and correlation analysis only reads data. A campaign changes only when you select ZIP codes and choose to exclude them or remove an exclusion.

Can I combine ZIP code data from multiple campaigns?

Yes. Within one Google Ads account, select multiple campaigns and choose View Combined, including paused campaigns if you want. LeadUp adds up impressions, clicks, conversions, cost, and revenue for each ZIP code, then recalculates metrics like CPL and conversion rate from those totals. The map, table, correlation analysis, and exclusions all work on the combined set.

When should I combine campaigns for location analysis?

Combine campaigns that target the same area and a similar audience when each one has too few conversions per ZIP code to draw a conclusion. More data per ZIP makes the picture more reliable. Avoid combining very different offers, because a strong result from one can hide a weak result from another.

Can I research new locations before launching a campaign?

Yes. Location Search lets you filter ZIP codes by state and demographic criteria, such as income or population, without any campaign data. You can review the matches on a map and copy the ZIP codes for your Google Ads location targeting.

Does location analysis work outside the United States?

It is built for U.S. ZIP codes. The ZIP code boundaries, Census demographics, and ZIP exclusions all rely on U.S. data.

How much does location analysis cost?

Location analysis is included in the $49.99 monthly platform subscription and is not billed by usage.
